People often have questions about hypnotherapy. I have tried to answer the most common questions here, but if your concern isn’t covered, please get in touch with me.
Not at all. You remain in total control at all times, in or out of trance and cannot be made to do or say anything you don’t want to.
Not with Solution Focused hypnotherapy. Some forms of hypnotherapy require visiting previous experiences and events to explore and analyse them before searching for answers. With Solution Focused hypnotherapy we discuss and explore the future that you would like, for this, we do not have to visit the past or origin of any traumatic events. “Yesterday has gone, along with anything that could have made it different”, let’s leave it there.
You will not be truly asleep, unconscious or under any kind of spell, you will just be very relaxed. You will be in ‘trance’, sometimes described as being “relaxed yet fully aware”. Trance is a very natural state; think about the last time you were engrossed in a good book or film, you were probably in a light trance. In hypnosis, you might think you are asleep but you can think and hear what the therapist is saying to you, and in some cases respond.
Clients may feel embarrassed or ashamed about their issue or past events that may have created that memory/issue. You will need to feel comfortable enough with me to discuss the issues you need too, and I will endeavour to build that rapport and help make you feel comfortable and reassured. You do not have to say anything that they are not ready to speak about.
No, not perhaps in the way you are thinking. The mind state that you will be in during trance makes you more susceptible to suggestions and without a suitably qualified therapist, there is the potential for creating false or distorted memories.
No, you cannot get stuck; I will bring you back to full awareness. If you do drift off to sleep during trance and no-one is around to wake you up, you will wake up naturally when you are ready to. Many people use the trance state with self-hypnosis last thing at night to help them drift off into a wonderful night’s sleep.
No not at all. If you want to move a part of your body, you can. Got an itch? scratch it. You are in control at all times.

Yes, online hypnotherapy is just as effective as working together in the clinic and follows the same structured approach. It is useful if you are restricted by time, location, medical conditions or other commitments.
Anyone who wants to be hypnotised can be; however, if you do not want to be hypnotised you will not be. For a successful outcome, I need your full co-operation and participation. You will find it easier to achieve a hypnotic state with continued practice by using the relaxation audio recording that I will give you, at home and as our weekly sessions progress.
- A reliable internet connection
- Laptop, PC, Tablet, Phone or other devices with good sound and camera
- A quiet comfortable place where you will not be disturbed
- Headphones (though not essential) allow you to be fully immersed during treatment
- You will need to turn off notifications & calls on your device
- A blanket or similar, as your body temperature may drop, as it does when you’re asleep at night
There are a few conditions where hypnosis is considered inappropriate:
- Epilepsy that is not under control or considered unsuitable by your GP
- Those with severe mental health problems or learning disabilities
- Anyone under the influence of alcohol or certain drugs
- Very young children (under five’s)
No, Hypnotherapy involves far more than just relaxation. Many people arrive with symptoms of anxiety and stress which can negatively influence how they think and cope with life issues or the problems they carry. Introducing a relaxed state can be useful in helping adopt new thinking and coping strategies and many clients report beginning to sleep better as a result of a hypnotherapy session. A reduction of anxiety can also be achieved from a relaxation class such as yoga or meditation, which uses similar relaxation techniques. In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, it is what precedes and follows the relaxation element that provides the ‘therapeutic’ part of the process.
The use of positive suggestions whilst under hypnosis has been shown to help people to undergo pain-free surgery (without anaesthetics) or help remove a phobia, which shows it is far more than just a form of relaxation.
You are likely to feel calm and very relaxed following your hypnotherapy session. After a couple of minutes to become fully aware of your surroundings again you will be your normal self. Many people thoroughly enjoy the process. If the session is dealing with a sensitive subject-matter then it is not uncommon to feel a little emotional.
Fundamentally no, but using the audio recording I provide every night, will reinforce the work we do in the sessions, and may improve the benefits of the hypnotherapy and speed of results.
No hypnotherapists should ever guarantee 100% success and it would be wise to be cautious of any hypnotherapist that does make such claims. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a collective course of action, and success is dependent on your desire, motivation and commitment to making changes in your life, with the professional application of my training and skills. Working together we are more likely to achieve successes.
The number of hypnotherapy sessions required for lasting change is different for everyone because each of us is unique in terms of our feelings and experiences. Sometimes change happens fairly quickly, for others, it can take longer. Some clients return after a successful treatment programme every month to maintain their focus, which some call ‘mind management’. Hypnotherapy is not a magic wand, the Solution Focused approach I use does help you create positive change in a relatively short time.
